Some Notes About Content Warnings

My novels have a varied mix of suspenseful, sad, and frightening scenes. They have grown pretty much organically from the ideas that sprang to my mind, and the developments I felt the urge to explore as I wrote.

It's a faithful expression of the types of thoughts that come naturally to me. And my thoughts can sometimes go to some scary and morbid places, as well as some entertaining and joyful ones.

For the majority of readers, I expect that the joy will win out, and it won't be upsetting in a way that causes them to regret reading my work. Yet I know I can't reach this goal for every possible reader.

So, to minimize the amount of harm done, I have chosen to add a list of content warnings.

I know this is not yet the norm for published books. But I think it will be a better world if that changes, so I personally want to be a writer who does this.

My previously published writing hasn't always been so good about this. I want to get better, in the interests of two goals that I think should be uncontroversial: being kind to others, and presenting my work as honestly as possible.

Such a warning list has two purposes: 1. to advise readers of content that is there, and 2. to reassure readers of what content is not there.

I know I won't be able to foresee every detail that readers will want to know before reading. And even if fully warned, some readers may still feel that a scene was handled in a harmful way, despite my best efforts. No amount of research, no number of sensitivity readers, can totally prevent this.

But I believe it's still worthwhile to make the effort. Any honest person, when selling or giving away anything, should try to make it something people want... and try to make sure it goes to people who want it, not people who don't want it.

But here's the problem with that. A book is a creation whose value is partly in surprising the recipient. To address all the scenarios in the plot that readers may want to be warned or reassured about... I have to spoil some of the surprises.

Thus, I'm putting the content warnings in an appendix at the very end of each book, after everything else. They are separated by topic, to minimize unwanted spoilers and maximize targeted warning for those who want it.

And they are also up here, on this web page, which will continue to be updated as I become aware of further things I should warn about. Please feel free to email me with any suggestions.

Any mistakes are my own, and I will keep trying to do better.
