5. LGBTQ characters
The same-sex female couple from the previous book remain together and happy. They help solve a mystery and save the city, and there is no significant conflict regarding their relationship with each other.
There are several expressions of prejudice (from villains and minor characters) against LGBTQ people in general.
The story continues to alternate with diary entries from the intersex transgender character in the past, bringing her story closer to the present.
She goes through a dangerous ordeal that begins with her being inadvertently misgendered by disrespectful caregivers, and ends with her nearly dying when she escapes into the woods.
Until the last few chapters of the book, her fate is uncertain. However, at the end she turns out to be alive, happy, and in a position of power and influence. Her partner is also alive and happy with her.
